THE Brunei national lawn bowls team came back with the champion's trophy after beating Labuan A 18-6 in the final at the Integration Lawn Bowls Championship in Labuan, Malaysia mixed triples event, last Saturday.

The tournament, which began on Wednesday, took place at the Labuan International Lawn Bowls Arena and saw the participation of four Bruneian teams with the other three from the Wisdom Bowls Club.
They were among the 10 teams from Labuan and Sabah who participated in the tournament.

Pg Mohd Salleh Chuchu Pg Hj Tuah, one of the players representing Brunei, said that the team's positive mentality helped them get to the final stage following a shaky start in the early matches of the tournament.

"We drew in our opening games and were not at the top of the group but we had to motivate ourselves," he told The Brunei Times.

"I am proud of our performance because we came back, from behind, to take the championship," he said.

Wisdom Bowls Club official, Abd Rahim Mohd Taib, said that the Bruneians had to adapt to the different turf used in the Labuan competition.

"Labuan had the advantage because they were used to fast greens which is something that we were not used to as we play on synthetic grass which makes the ball roll slower," he said.

"We had to control our bowling strength otherwise because the ball does not stop as sooner," he added.

As for the Wisdom Bowls club teams, he said that they did not fare as well finding it difficult against their Malaysian competitors.

"This the first time the players on the team have played together in a competition outside of Brunei so they needed more time to blend their game," he said, adding that the junior team members were playing better than their senior counterparts.

"However, we are still happy to have joined the competition as the main purpose of it was to gain experience playing against other countries," he said.

He added that the club will start "training intensively" as part of future preparations including a friendly competition in late May at Labuan.

"Our coach has made it compulsory for the lawn bowlers to come to Wednesday and Saturday practice so that it will help us prepare for future tournaments," he said.

"The upcoming friendly is hoped to give more exposure to the club's players who can then improve their skills." The Brunei Times
