36 teams battle for Lawn Bowls Pairs open title

Tuesday, February 7, 2012
TOMORROW'S Brunei Darussalam Lawn Bowls Pairs Open Championships will see 36 teams battle for glory.

The tournament organisers released the draw yesterday, where 24 men's teams and 12 women's teams will compete in the five-day competition at the Lawn Bowls Centre at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The 24 men's teams are divided into four groups, with the women's competition also grouping six pairs in each of the two groups. The top-two teams in each group advance to the next round.

The competition has attracted teams from Thailand, Macau, the United Arab Emirates and Sabah.

One of the players to watch out for in the Brunei team is evergreen bowler Hj Naim Brahim (pic), a name synonymous with success.

He was the country's only gold medallist at the 2007 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand after defeating Singapore's Chia Tee Chiak to capture the men's singles event.

Hj Naim will be playing with Pg Tengah Pg Hj Tajuddin in tomorrow's event.

Brunei is seen as tournament's favourites considering their track record playing in front of their home fans.
