ABD Rahman Omar and Hj Rosli Hj Ibrahim of Brunei 16 emerged as
the champion after defeating Mohd Israt Aminuddin Abd Ghani and Mohd Hafiz of
Brunei 5 16-13 in the Brunei Darussalam Men's Pairs Lawn Bowls Open
Championships yesterday.
The tournament was held at the Lawn Bowls Centre
of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas. "It is only
February, and this is already the second gold medal for me in the lawn ball this
year, the last time was in the Inter Ministry Sports Championship in January
when I represented the Prime Minister's Office," said Abd Rahman.
"We are
very proud of our performance today...the opponents, they are young, we lead
10-0 in the game but they gave a really good fight that changed the score in the
end to 16-13," he added.
Meanwhile, Hj Rosli Hj Ibrahim, who won the gold
for the Ministry of Development in the Inter Ministry Sports Championship
organised by the Department of Youth and Sports last January, is already eyeing
the next tournament in and outside the region.
"There will be Hong Kong
Tiger Bowl Lawn ball Championship to held in Hong Kong this July and World Bowl
Tournament in Adelaide, Australia, sometime this year," he said
"We still
do not know what the plan is, we hope to join those tournaments. I am very happy
with my performance today, and hope to continue this form throughout the year,"
he added.
Earlier in the semi final, Pg Md Salleh Chuchu and Salleh Hitam
of Ilmu Alim 1 were defeated by Abd Rahman Omar and Hj Rosli Hj Ibrahim of
Brunei 16 with a score of 12-15. Mohd Israt Aminuddin Abd Ghani and Mohd Hafiz
of Brunei 5 demolished Yakup Abd Hamid and Md Amirul Kamal of Brunei 1 with the
scoreline of 18-9.
Meanwhile, in the Brunei Darussalam Women's Pairs Lawn
Bowls, Nurasmidah Abd Murah and Siti Solehah Halim of Sabah E was crowned as the
champion after defeating Fatin Aqilah Amran and Nursyafiqa Johanan Tan 19-6 in
the final. "It was a good final, we do not have so much pressure since we are in
the final with our fellow Sabah athlete," said Siti Solehah Halim.
"We
are the Sukma athletes, the next tournament will be the Sukma tournament in
Pahang in July, so it is good to win here," she said.
Md Ali Akhbar, the
team leader of the United Arab Emirates, who participated in the tournament was
happy with his team performance despite failing to bring home a medal.
"I
am happy with my team performance, we had a very long 9-hour-flight from Dubai,
but after all it was a good tournament, we won some of the games yesterday," he
said.
"This is my first time to be here in Brunei...we are looking
forward to compete in the World Bowl Tournament in Adelaide, Australia," he
added.
Present in the event to award the winners was the Deputy Director
in the Department of Youth and Sports, Hj Zamri Dato Paduka Hj
Hamdani.
