WISDOM Bowls Club ended their one-day clinic with much appreciation from Perlis’ Derma Secondary School yesterday.
Twelve students from the Malaysian school underwent a morning session of learning the importance of ethics on the field, discipline, sportsmanship and basic rules through Wisdom Bowls coach Hj Abdul Gafar POKDSS Hj Mohd Taha.
The workshop also emphasised on the importance of developing the game at the grassroots level and to dismiss claims that the sport is only meant for the elderly.
Following their classroom sessions was the practical that was held at the Lawn Bowls Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Hj Abdul Gafar spent the session with tips on how to stand and delivery of the ball.
One exercise involved rolling the ball between a small gap upon delivery.
The students will match up against Wisdom Bowls Club and Rimba School in a friendly today.
“I was looking for a club that was willing to help us train our students and I found Wisdom Bowls Club on the Internet and contacted them through there and now we’re here,” said the head of the Derma Secondary School delegation, Shahida Abdullah.
“This morning they had a workshop and Hj Abdul Gafar taught the students all the skills, tips and laws of this game.
“I think the students will benefit a lot from this program.
“They were introduced to the game in primary school, so they all have some knowledge - but it’s just the lack of skill.
“We have three students so far that represent our school at the national level.
“I heard this coach is very good in lawn bowls and we’re very lucky that they accepted us.
“I like them because they are very helpful and gave us a warm welcome.
“I’m very thankful to all the committee and hope that we will come again so that my students will be able to gain more knowledge and skills,” added the head of delgation.
President of Wisdom Bowls Club, Hj Johari Achee told The Brunei Times in a previous interview that the main purpose of the school’s visit here was to ask the club to provide a coaching clinic.
“We are very happy to extend our assistance because we have a very good local coach in Hj Abdul Gafar,” he said.
“We are very pleased that we can provide them with assistance in this aspect.
“We are just a new club that started last year... But somehow we have good experience from our players who have been exposed to lawn bowls competitions in the region.
“At the end of the coaching clinic we will handout certificates issued by our club.
“This is the first step of our grooming process to produce young players for the national team in case we have major competitions.
“In a way it also gives exposure to young Bruneians who are also joining the clinic,” added Hj Johari.
